Lan Huan may be a kind man, but he is not a fool.
Many have tried to go after him for multiple different reasons: money, sex, good grades, etc. He learned rather quickly as a teenager to still be kind, but to be on guard, after many of his peers tried to persuade him to give them homework answers and assignments by acting as if they liked him more than shallow friendship. Of course, Lan Huan had friends, but he could never shake the feeling that they all wanted something from him, in one way or another.
The feeling only worsened when, the first year into their postgraduate degrees, Meng Yao confessed to murdering their mutual friend two years prior.
So, when a student in one of the advanced environmental sciences classes he TAs for one day approaches him to proposition him for coffee after class, he is nothing but cautious.
