Summary
Mike stretched out his legs, his feet barely brushing against Will's, yet he still felt it. The contact was fleeting but enough to stir something in him. He cleared his throat, the sound seeming louder in the quiet of the basement, but he didn’t move his feet from where they were planted; he wasn’t going to let this become awkward.
Will noticed that Mike didn't shift his feet either, both of them silently deciding this was just how they were going to sit now.
"I’ve missed this," Mike admitted fondly. He turned to look at Will as he spoke, his expression earnest.
"Missed what?" Will asked, absentmindedly picking at the loose strings on his sweatpants, a nervous habit he developed.
"This," Mike said, gesturing between them with a slight smile. "Us just getting to hang out with each other."
Will would be lying if he said he didn’t miss it too. They used to spend hours like this, lost in conversation.
"Me too," he replied quietly, a soft smile creeping onto his face as a familiar sense of nostalgia settled in his gut.

“Oh. Okay. I mean, yeah of course. Me neither, like, either way.” Stupid Mike, stupid.They fell into an uncomfortable silence but neither of them moved, Mike felt like his feet has melted into the concrete below them. He didn’t dare look Will in the eye, even if there wasn’t much else to look at.

Especially since he has a superhero girlfriend of four years that he's not sure how he feels about, and his best friend has a new girlfriend (no matter what anyone tells him, he's firm in this belief) and he kind of hates her guts.

And maybe because he’s looking so closely, or maybe just because it’s Will and Mike knows all his little tells like the back of his own hand—better, probably—he knows that Will’s about to collapse probably ten seconds before it happens, and he’s moving, skirting around the mangled corpse of the demogorgon and sliding the last few feet through the mix of blood and Upside Down slime to drop to his knees and catch Will just before his head would’ve hit the concrete.

Picking up right where vol 1 left off, the right side up gang regroups and Mike has lots of feelings about everything that's happened. This is 100% a byler fic, but it's just as much about Mike having (or at least starting) his version of Will's self-acceptance/gaining his powers arc, because he needs and deserves it.
