Watching the pair eat side by side takes Tommy twenty years back into the past. This girl—Ellie—she’s nothing like Sarah. Sarah was all girly with soft edges and outspoken intelligence and quick wit and deep empathy. Smiles came easy to her, and so did tears. This kid, she’s truly a product of the times they live in. She’s rude and violent and untrusting. Still, it doesn’t matter that she’s nothing like Sarah, for looking at her and Joel is so goddamn familiar. He feels like he’s back in their kitchen watching Sarah and Joel trade quips over breakfast.
