Summary
Colin felt his stomach drop.
“Penelope,” he croaked out. “I was simply joking – I-I mean to say, it was nothing but gentlemen teasing each other-“
“And yet you thought it appropriate to condemn me to an unmarriageable status.” She continued harshly, mouth twisting up into a sneer. “You thought it acceptable that a man in your position, a part of the most influential family amongst the ton, should declare a young woman so unworthy of marriage that the thought itself was simply amusing. That to ensure that no bachelor would dare to be seen pursuing me and therefore sentence me to a life of a spinster. That is what you thought it fair to do.”
******
Somehow, Colin has seriously, completely, messed up.His best friend, his only real friend, is furious with him and he doesn't know how to fix this. How can you undo the kind of mistake he had made? How can you redeem yourself to a woman like Penelope Featherington? How can you tell her that you might actually love her instead?
Colin had a feeling this was not going to be easy.

(chapter 1)
“Penelope,” he said, touching her gloved hand to get her attention. Startled, she jerked back, pulling her clasped hands away from his grip firmly.
Snap.
Her face looked to be filled with venom and the intensity of took Colin’s breath away as he stared at her open-mouthed, hand still out-stretched towards her own.
“Do not touch me.” She hissed so quietly that he could barely hear it, eyes hard like stones.
(chapter 3)
“May I?” A voice came from behind the Viscount. “And what say I about that, eh?”
Rolling his eyes, Anthony stepped begrudgingly aside to reveal the looming figure of his younger brother, who, Penelope was relieved to see, had only just approached with glasses of lemonade in hand. Penelope steadied herself when she caught sight of those bright green eyes, focused intently on her face, and straightened herself quickly.

Summary
“What - what were they saying?”
Penelope glances at him sideways. His cheeks are a little flushed, that pretty mouth of his partly open. He is still staring at her.
“Um. Well. They said you were daddy material.”
The minute it comes out of her mouth she knows she should not have said it. It is so deeply, awfully inappropriate. Her cheeks burn. She is about to apologise when Colin straightens and twists his whole body towards her.
“What does that mean?” he asks. When she does not answer, he uses his stern teacher voice, the one he uses on the students. “Penelope. Tell me.”
Why does that make her melt?

Summary
"She had way too much tonight. And he knew she would, she does this every time a guy breaks her heart. Or her ego, maybe. Her heart never really seems in it, which is confusing to him since Penelope does just about everything heart-first.
Except dating.
He wonders if that has something to do with her upbringing, her mother, a lack of love. Some sort of avoidance of it all, some sort of block.
But still, every time. With Henry she drank every single beer out of his fridge. She hates beer. He held her hair back as she hurled for hours in the early morning. With Phineas she showed up at his already plastered, mascara stains on her cheeks as she smiled weird and wide and asked to come inside. With George she was calmer, but she still called him after drinking a whole bottle of wine by herself and he could tell she had been crying. It's always clear in her voice. In her eyes.
Heart-first."

Colin: …
Pen: don’t tell him I said that
