“Is that… you, Viktor?”
It was barely more than a whisper, but he almost couldn’t bring himself to ask in the first place. The question scared him, the coming answer he feared even more. He knew the question was callous and loaded, but he had to know.
Those warm eyes faltered and became reproachful, they averted with a look of guilt, his eyebrows scrunching together. Viktor hugged his good knee tighter to his chest, his short and shallow breathing and his tightened lips betraying the hurt he felt at the question. The creases at the side of his nose deepened in dismay in the way only Viktor's face suited. All of these things told Jayce everything he needed desperately to know; this wasn’t the serene herald, or even the maniacal machine herald.
This was Viktor.

“I get that you're difficult by nature,” Akuna says, sliding down the wall to sit on the floor of Cal's cell next to him like they're not interrogator and prisoner, but just casual acquaintances hanging out. He cracks open his own bottle of water and takes a sip, then continues, “or Lank wouldn't be losing more of his hair trying to break you. But when I tell you to drink, you gotta drink, Kestis.”
Cal snorts. “What,” he croaks, “I have to get better so you can be the one to break me instead?”
Akuna pauses for a moment, then shrugs and nods. “Pretty much.”
