Summary
The chorus of birds faded as the hours ticked by, overtaken by the creak of branches in the wind. The three of them had settled into reading side by side in camp chairs beside the evaporator, just close enough to enjoy its heat. The chickens mostly stayed around the driveway, scratching up leaves to check for bugs, though one occasionally strayed closer for affection and to double check for any snacks they might have.
Lois set her book on her thigh and watched the steam as it rose. She squeezed Clark’s hand, crossed her legs the other way and then the other and back again. Her foot found a log and tapped it so it rolled back and forth with a satisfying thunk.
It had been about two hours.
And it was nice.
It was quiet, in that spectacularly loud way of a forest. The breeze sang through skeletal limbs of trees as it carried a chorus of peepers from a marsh tucked somewhere behind a hill. Clark had been perched in the rickety camp chair beside her for almost an hour without speeding off, which was a rarity in Metropolis. Jimmy was right beside him, his nose tucked into one of the ancient books from his aunt’s shelves. -

"What do you think, Clark?" Lois narrowed her eyes at Clark, who had been leaning against the counter. “You’ve been quiet over there.”
Clark poked his glasses back up his nose as though it would hide his nervousness, "Maybe we should eat cookies now and look at it with fresh eyes later?”
He pulled the tray of cookies out of the tiny toaster oven and placed them on a plate so they could cool while he loaded another batch.
"We've been at it for a few hours." Jimmy added, "Oh! We could play three-person Cryptid Chess."
"We can play what now? Lois set her notes down and stared at Jimmy. Clark offered her a cookie with a grin. -
