Summary
In an alternate 18th Century, where people of all races are sold into slavery to pay off debts, John Childermass has been a slave since his mother died at five years old. He was initially owned by Gilbert Norrell's cruel cousin, but is eventually bought by Mr. Norrell himself.
When Mr. Segundus arrives at Hurtfew estate with a Very Important Question, it seems the return of Magic is nigh. Yet when Mr. Norrell's half brother arrives demanding Childermass back, Mr. Norrell falls ill with a strange illness before he can be convinced to set Childermass free, and Mr. Segundus breaks his leg and his forced to convalesce at the Abby, it seems like the Raven King's plan has been thwarted once and for all... but has it?
