Summary
Wren was enthralled by the ocean. Rumors said she’d been bitten by a shark when she was a child and it has tasted the magic in her veins, granting her some of its powers to turn her into a fearsome sea witch. She spent most of her days there; fishing in her dinghy or with her feet submerged as she sat by the pier and scribbled in her notebook. She wanted to be a scientist, she said. That’s what most witches did; hid their magic behind logic. She wanted to discover the mythical mermaid and revolutionize marine biology. Day in and day out the witch scoured the ocean's horizon, swam with dolphins, dug between corals surrounding her house. She sent paper after paper to the Institute for Marine Sciences in the city detailing her findings of claw marks in the reeves and slender shadows in the depths. The children said they saw her slaughter animals and throw them into the sea clear sky nights.
But not even her witchy ways could lure the elusive mermaid out of hiding.
Until it did.
