He remembered the screaming, the night Kíli was born. There was a midwife in the village, but his mother was too proud to ask for help from those who were not her own kind. Fíli didn't know it, but if Dís had still been at Erebor when her time came, she would have been attended in a comfortable chamber with steaming hot water, clean linens, and the most attentive and knowledgeable healers. Instead she gave birth squatting on the shabby floor of their cottage, grunting and screaming with only Fíli there, and he was terrified because he didn't know what to do.

Geralt knows almost immediately that he’s made a mistake when he sends Jaskier away on that godforsaken mountain. He just doesn’t wholly understand why, and by the time he does it’s too late to change things. Instead, he goes and finds Ciri, and together they find Yennefer, and only then does he realise he needs to find Jaskier, too.
He hadn’t counted on Nilfgaard finding him first.

Summary
To pinpoint a single starting point for this story would be… difficult.
One could say it started with a young spitfire of a boy, running through the streets with his friends, making them laugh, keeping them happy, knowing that once night fell his smile would too.
One could say it started with a musician, new to the world yet so very tired, weighed down by the weight of the smog and fog and sick with a desire to either leave that damnable city or blow it all to smithereens.
One could say it started with a boy just trying to make a living as he risks his life each night, trying to fight off the monsters that plague the city he lives in.
One could say it started eons ago, when the first of his kind came into existence, wandering the world, always looking for those that he would finally take Home and claim as His.
But for our sake, we will chose one beginning… for now.
