Summary
“One quiet month,” Emma breathes, eyes fluttering. “ That’s all I want from you people. One month...” she coughs, and her eyes close. Regina presses her hands harder against Emma, and she jerks awake.
“One month of bear claws and gossiping with your mother’s diminutive minions on our citizens’ dime, you mean,” Regina replies, and Emma smiles, but Regina can see, feel her life leaking out between her fingers. Her heart speeds up and her breath catches in her throat at the thought of Emma dying here, alone with Regina in a mouldy cave.

"Three days later, Regina is officially a “subletter” in an apartment across the street from Emma and Henry’s building. She forces herself to wait a full day before calling the cell phone number Emma had given her. Regina’s more than a little disgruntled to get Emma’s voicemail, but remembers just in time not to snap at her and ask why the city is paying for an unavailable sheriff to go gallivanting around town without her cell phone. Instead, she leaves a perfectly reasonable message telling Emma she’s rented a place nearby and would love a tour of the neighborhood if she and Henry could spare the time.
Emma texts back later that day to suggest the following evening, and Regina feels her heart soar at the prospect of seeing Henry again so soon. She still hasn’t quite figured out how to broach the whole “magic is real, and I need you two to come with me to a small, not-quite-real town in Maine to stop my half-sister from wreaking havoc,” but that will come in due time she hopes. For now, what matters is making sure that Henry is safe and happy and well fed."

She thinks of how many times Regina has saved her life, how many times she's said her name in that way only she has. Somehow making it sound like one syllable, like it was formed to fit her mouth alone. Sometimes emphasizing the two, breaking her name up into halves. She thinks of all the smirks just for her, and the half-smiles, the crooked smiles, the overwhelmingly bright smiles. The sad ones (the recent ones). The ones that claw and burrow into Emma’s skin. The ones she wishes she could map out with her fingertips and understand.

Summary
Canon-divergent season 2. No wraith, no magic hat.
The curse is broken and their entire world shatters. When Regina is put on trial for crimes against the people, she's dealt a punishment no one could have ever imagined. Now saddled with the burden of responsibility, the Saviour seems intent on making it her personal mission to ensure Regina's safety. And it wouldn't be such a big deal, only there are feelings that choke Regina whenever Emma shows that she cares (which is often, and never ending, and a problem).
But Regina learns that wants and needs are often one in the same, that redemption can come in form of healing, and gifts from a curse can only be unwrapped by the people who broke it.
