Marina laughs. “Nothing?”
“You don’t cook at home?”
Marina shakes her head. “Have you seen our feature on Architentacle Digest? Our kitchen is for show.”

Summary
In the early days, it wasn’t unusual for Pearl to go out on their off days. She had a life, and Marina felt like some stray that she’d picked up back then so she was happy to sit in the room Pearl had given her in her huge estate and study the Inkling writing system or trawl the online encyclopedias to test the translator she was coding (and to practice her vocabulary) while Pearl continued on with her life.
That changed sometime in the last year, Marina reflects. Pearl stopped going out. Sometime around when Pearl synced their phone calendars so they could both see each other’s appointments, Pearl went cold on the dating front, and, when pressed, she gave some half-hearted excuse about focusing on their music.
But now...? Three weeks after finding out that Marina had been lying to her for years, Pearl is picking up girls again.

“We’re not so different,” Pearl said. She meant their powers—the ability to see beyond normal human comprehension—but Marina could sense the electrical signals in her own brain sometimes, and they were basically identical. Her small fist bumped into Marina’s arm. “When can I see your face, huh?”
Marina swallowed. The edges of her mask cut into her cheeks. “Not yet.”

Summary
Marina is having the best day of her life, and Pearl is trying very hard not to focus on the sensation of the ring pressed into the skin of her chest, held in place by the tightness of her costume and the chain around her neck. The crowd pulses in time with the drums and screams their guts out as Pearl pushes on through her rap beats, and they bring it home like always—and no one knows just how hard Pearl knocked herself into the past.
All except Marina, who grabs her hand as the stage descends and the smoke clears. They have exactly ten seconds until they’re whisked into a golf cart and rushed to the next stage, and Marina doesn’t waste them. She pulls Pearl close, presses her face into the top of her sweaty head, heaving for breath herself, and mumbles, “I can’t wait to perform with you like that for the rest of my life.”
And Pearl’s hearts seize and it’s all she can do to stop herself from proposing right there.
