Summary
Izuku is 11 when starts finding flowers on his desk. Some are crumpled—their delicate petals squished between other tiny fingers before falling onto his workspace—while others look fresh plucked. There are never any stems. Always, it’s just the flower head: clipped by nails or scissors right up to the stem base, like tiny beheaded gems. Maybe if he knew less, if he ignored the stomach-churning looks of his classmates and didn’t have to limp home everyday trying to hide the bruises and loneliness, he’d see them as a gift.
But they are not roses. Not gardenias, not violets, not tulips or dandelions. They’re not love flowers.
It takes 3 years more years of this for Midoriya to find himself on the roof, holding up the splayed petals of a red spider lily.
In some essential way, he’s already lost the chance to be whole. But maybe, years later—he’ll take a gamble at healing.
