They show up at birth, for the majority of people, and then in childhood for the rest. They don’t match, because the point isn’t to match—it’s to find the person who will be in your life forever, or something like it, the person who will make you whole. They reflect something core about that person, which invariably means they reflect something about their quirk, and there’s forums and apps and message boards all dedicated to matching up the abstract concepts on skin to the quirks they’re meant to convey.
