Mika smiles, though Yuu can see stark concern shining in his eyes. “I know, Kouta. Here let me check your temperature.”
Then, Mika bends down, close enough for Kouta’s haggard breaths to break against his skin. He closes his eyes and presses his forehead firmly against Kouta’s clammy skin, lips pursed and set with concentration.
For reasons he can’t even begin to understand, Yuu’s stomach flips.
(or the one in which Yuu begins feeling funny when Mika spends all his time nursing the kids back to health instead of annoying him like usual.)

Summary
They crawl from the dark together, hand in hand, bloody and bleeding but—the air moves above ground, Mika’d forgotten, and even the snow’s bite can’t numb the fierce burst of emotion in his chest. Yuu, trailblazing before him, trips, falling down a sudden slope.
Mika yelps as he’s pulled with him. They tumble for so long Mika’s head spins and reels when they bottom out, kid limbs tangled, fogged breath rising to gray sky together for the first time in years.
“Mika,” Yuu says, his name catching in his throat. Mika turns to look where Yuu points and gasps. “They lied-“
The mountain falls out before them and into a valley bedded with the bones of some ruined city—not all ruined, he amends when he notices lights flickering in faraway windows. He unclenches his hands from where they’ve grabbed fistfuls of Yuu’s clothes, shaking from the cold, the realization that humankind hasn’t lost.

Before Mika, the idea of having a vampire directly drink his blood had been a ghoulish, horrifying idea, a thing of nightmares. But whenever Mika sank his teeth into Yuu’s flesh and gently, slowly drew out his essence, it made Yuu feel… weightless. A little sleepy. Happy. Warm, which was odd, considering.
And this time it’s even better.

Mika feels the air shift, and he flinches when fingers, calloused and firm, tilt his chin upward. The darkness isn’t shrouding Yuu’s face anymore; he is mere inches away. Mika squeezes his eyes shut.
“Well,” Yuu breathes. “It doesn’t matter how we got here. We might as well make the most of it.”

“You were.” Yuu’s sad smile is teasing now, and something warm fills his heart. “Both your head and your ass were so big, I always thought I had an elephant over my back instead of a boy.”
