Kiara stiffened. Surely JJ wasn’t addressing her. “What?”
Her eyes slowly slid to his, as pleasantly as nails on a chalkboard. And sure enough, he stared back at her, clear blue flitting from her face to the stained emblem on her chest.
“My hoodie.”
“Oh,” Kiara said, because what the fuck else was she supposed to say? She landed him with a look she hoped was as unimpressed as she felt, and gave away none of the burning in her ears. Glanced down at the hoodie as if to study it, as if she didn’t already know exactly what she was wearing. “I don’t know. I guess.”
She figured this had to be the part where she melted into a puddle, or the building caught fire. No worse than the pain of slipping out of an elevator to go about her day after this shit.

Musa didn’t know whether she was angrier that he was going or that he didn’t tell her. Didn’t know if angry was even the right word, exactly.
It wasn’t like they were dating. They hardly even called themselves friends, but they were. She knew they were. Surely she was owed some sort of courtesy notice before he slipped off on some random suicide mission.
There just- there wasn’t enough time.

It wasn’t that he’d never thought about it. Of course he fucking had. Musa was hot, and he had two functioning eyes, and he could tolerate talking to her for more than five minutes, which was more than he could say for almost every other idiot in the school.
But for the longest time, there had been Bea ensnaring most of his attentions, and Musa had been sickeningly love struck, walking hand in hand with Harvey Junior for months. At best, she was a mind fairy, way too complicated for him to deal with, and she didn’t put up with his shit anyway. Unavailable in all the ways that held his interest.
Then suddenly she was something broken into pieces at his feet and for fuck’s sake, if he didn’t feel a little too responsible for keeping that from happening again.
And now she was… Something.
