“First time here?” The girl said, taking a sip of her drink.
Percy blinked.
“There’s hot chocolate on the stove.” She continued, waving a nonchalant hand in the direction of a small kitchenette, “You may as well get settled. This usually takes a while.”
The girl – who Percy could now see had messy black hair and piercing emerald-green eyes – then sank into a large armchair and pulled out a book.
Percy blinked again.
“Are you dead?”
The girl paused.
“Hmm. I think so.” She said, “Though sometimes it’s hard to tell.”
“Am I dead?” Percy then asked, idly wondering if this was all just a very strange dream.
“Most likely. Though if you’re here instead of whichever afterlife you’d usually go to, then you’re probably not dead-dead. Just… mostly dead.”

When Percy turned four, Sally Jackson sat him down and told him to never ever let anyone get their hands on his coat.
“Always hide in plain sight, Perseus,” She told him, taking his feathered coat and shaking it out until it became a blue raincoat. “Humans can be quite stupid nowadays. They forget the stories of us, and we need to be thankful for that. Never swim naked, never forget your raincoat, and never ever let someone hold your coat.”
Percy had the urge to grab his coat and go hide in his room when his mom brought home Smelly Gabe for the first time, but he didn’t. He sat on the couch and pretended to tolerate the man. A precious cloak is a far bigger target than a random old coat. Hiding in plain sight.

She was silent for a second, appraising him. "You're right you are here. Against all odds, against all expectations and rules you are here. But have you seen what that cost you Percy?" She stared into his eyes, grey orbs sparkling with stars. "Have you seen exactly what you gave up to get home? Have you realised just how much changed down there? There's nothing wrong with not being okay Percy, there's nothing wrong with needing support. You have just proven yourself in a way that no one should ever have to, don't be stupid now. It's going to be hard, you're going to get frustrated, angry and sad. There will be days where you feel as if everything's back to normal, and then one wrong comment, one glance in the mirror from the wrong angle will send you spiralling. That's when the people you need will be there, helping you through each small feeling, emotion and step. So don't hide your pain Percy, especially when I already know."
