Summary
Melpomene, Princess of Revels and Daughter of Lord Dionysus, is a woman with a lot of would-be assassins in her life — sycophants of her father's rival Apollo, seeking eir favour in exchange for her life. It would thus be wise of her to learn to protect herself, and how better than to consult the famed Captain Alcippe, with whom she's already so well acquainted?
Alcippe, meanwhile, has taken the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone: her personal engineer and so-called squire Aliki has been due a few refreshers on her own basic training at arms. Setting the pair against one another as training partners is sure to be beneficial for both her squire and her lady.
For those who care about continuity: this is set at some indeterminate time during the two month period of Interlude: Seasons in The Persephone Effect. It takes place a short time after my previous fic, A Thorn in the Light: https://archiveofourown.org/works/87890796

Melpomene, daughter of Dionysus, has been invited to a social event at the home of one of the Valley's most prolific artists — a tremendous honour, if not for the fact that the traditionalists loyal to the stylings of Apollo and Artemis who will be in attendance are far from the welcoming sort to an experimentalist such as her. Concerned for her safety as much as her confidence, she has enlisted Captain Alcippe, Honoured Pilot of the Handmaiden-class eidolon, to act as guardian and moral support.

Summary
While the Champions of Elysium in their mighty Banner-class eidolons make their way to segment 314 of Wall Caryatid to hold back a breach in Elysium's defences, the 32nd Cohort of Lord Ares must hold the line against the encroaching colossi as well as they can. Captain Alcippe leads their efforts in slowing down the pack, but the reserves on the walls are too thin to face this threat without significant losses.
This story is the opening few pages of my book in progress, Rat in a Corner, set in the world of Gunmetal Olympus by Maria Ying! It takes place during Chapter 10 (First Blood) of the first book, The Hades Calculus.
