Hua Cheng lifted his head slowly, wiping the remnants of tears from his face with the back of his hand. The agony did not vanish, but it sharpened into purpose. He was finally strong enough to protect him.

By all rights, the True Shape Serum shouldn’t work on him. It's a paltry trick, no more than an annoyance considering the vastness of his spiritual power and the breadth of his experience with spellwork. So it's hard to say why Hua Cheng’s spiritual energy reacts to it the way it does.
Possibly, the enchantment recognizes that there's nothing he wants less in the world than to lie to His Highness now that he’s finally found him again, and seizes on this weakness.
