Max isn’t angry, only weary, when he says sharply, “Stop that. I won’t break.”
Charles goes still. His eyes are twin flames in the dark.
“Oh,” he whispers. “Will you?”
And Max isn’t quick to frighten and does not ever hope to be, but he’s still dazed by the long-forgotten sensation of having someone see straight through him—and not even because of the blood that sweetens his cheeks as it dries.
