That was odd too. Kieran rarely, if ever, appeared anxious. Rarely did he ever allow his usual shield of cool, collected indifference slip, or for his steps to emit even the slightest sound, even when he was in the precinct. That silent, swift gait seemed to come naturally to him, as if embedded in his DNA, so to hear every step he took, to hear the soles of his polished dress shoes echo in the hallway as he accelerated at the sight of Lauren was a novelty.
His pace was that of a frantic man.

Summary
Six months after the demolition the Phantom Scythe, Ardhalis has finally reached a state of tentative stability. The near revolution prompted numerous government changes, most notably, the creation of a Parliamentary system to check and manage the decisions made by the royals and to advocate fairness for all citizens.
Closer to home, Kieran has become a consultant for the APD. The job was a compromise after an arduous fight by the eleventh precinct for the pardon of the Purple Hyacinth. The compromise saved him from a life sentence in the Tower, but put him under the thumb of the police for “observation” and “management.” Although Lauren is indignant in regards to the compromise, Kieran accepts it willingly.
And so, their lives fell into temporary peace… until a string of murders begins. On a frosty spring morning, the dead bodies of three parliament members are strung up to the new government building. Suspicion immediately turns toward Kieran, until Lauren uncovers clues about the perpetrator. Tensions thicken as the country once more braces for an impending war, this time against a country with a much greater military force.

Summary
When a black cat begins following Kieran, he has to somehow convince his (very) reluctant wife to accept it.
Basically, lauki gets a cat whether they want one or not because that’s how cats work.
Fits in the It’s Not Like That universe but can easily be read on its own! :)
