Laughter rang in the distance, mixing with the clinking of wine jars and a soft tinkle of bells, but he stood by the empty swing. Zhao Yuanzhou gripped the rope and pushed it slowly, carrying a rare weight of somberness; Zhuo Yichen wanted to scoop the feeling into his hands and crush it into dust.
Let’s go eat with the others, he wanted to say. You haven’t seen them for a long time. Doesn’t it hurt to have such a long dream all alone? Is it better there than it would be with me?
