What if devola and popola told a slightly different story one where Instead of the black book being the villain it was instead the black book needed to be purified and fuse with the white book to cure Yonah .
When asked the questions about the truth their is one more question, what is that nature of corruption that you and the shadow lord share, Nier Tries to avoid answering the question with the options it presents saving it for last before being forced to answer it to open the door. Obsession with Saving your/Our Sister , that was the answer he picked and that singular acknowledgement nearly destroyed him completely but he couldn't give up not until he saved yonah but his will to fight was severely affected.
Before answering the question with the truth he refused to acknowledge the shades between him and the shadow lord originally had a chance to move out of the way in combination with his reduced will to fight making the devola and popola fight take much longer. Our story begins near the end moments before Nier enters the shadow lords room ready to fight not to kill the shadow lord but to claim grimoire noir, cure the black scrawl to save yonah.
