Summary
By the time summer had rolled around it’d been a few months since Hua Cheng’s disappearance. Xie Lian settled into a routine to keep busy while he waited.
Sometimes he’d forget himself while out scrap collecting. The little village nearby had a good selection of products available so on occasion he’d instinctively turned to show an interesting bauble to a man who wasn't there. The vendors would look at him a little strangely when he did but he brushed off their well meaning questions for his health. No one had to know how this made his heart twist. How the sight of maple red cloth made his eyes sting. How the jingling of wind chimes had him scanning the crowds for a silhouette he wouldn’t find.
It was fine. He was fine! San Lang would come back. He just had to wait.

Hua Cheng naturally settled his head on Xie Lian's shoulder as he wrapped his arms around his waist. His hands rested directly over the god's golden core. Xie Lian immediately leaned into the embrace. His husband was all angles but he'd never get tired of hugging him.
Husband, he thought giddily. He could still hardly believe it. Even as royalty he barely spared a thought to marriage, much to his parents' chagrin. It wasn't long ago that being this happy would be nothing short of a miracle.
"What happens?" Hua Cheng murmured. "When you break your vows?"

As the sun slowly set over Linkon City, the whole area sparkled with a golden hue. For those quiet moments just before the sun disappeared below the horizon, the glass skyscrapers reflected iridescent beams for miles around. It was a beautiful sight that Maya might have enjoyed more on another day. She heaved a sigh as she exited the Unicorn Base. Stretching her arms above her head, she felt something give a satisfying pop in her shoulders. It had been a long week of hunts and nonstop reports that she was glad to be done with. The stress of the week was a palpable sensation weighing on her. Her eyes felt dry from pouring over documents with less than enough sleep. She couldn’t wait to head home to crash in a pile of plushies.

“Right.” Was he joking? As if M-21 had any idea what to buy. There was more money than he knew what to do with in that envelope.

“Why?” M-21 cried. He couldn't make sense of it. He was a failed experiment, it was all anyone called him for as long as he could remember. Every scientist he saw made sure to take every opportunity to remind him of that fact.
"Because you deserve a chance to live," Raizel said simply. "You're not a failure. M-21 is M-21. What you are depends on you. The Union might have started your story but you will be the one to finish it."
A warmth spread in his chest at the notion that Raizel had gambled his life for the chance that M-21 might do something with his. And yet that statement didn't sit right. "And you don't?" He demanded.
Raizel paused a second too long for comfort.
