I wasn’t naïve enough to believe anymore that I could ever actually evict him from my heart. He was woven too deep into the tissue and muscle to ever do that. That didn’t mean I had to let my heart be in charge anymore though. Growing up meant learning to listen to your head, too. And that was what I was trying to do. What I had to do. When he’d mentioned forever, something inside me froze. I wasn’t ready for that with him. Not yet. Not when we’d gone from a year of silence to talking about forever in twelve hours. It scared me shitless.
