Summary
"Adopted." It was a new word Anya had learned since the policeman had brought her here. Getting adopted meant you were going to a family. Some of the kids called it a “forever family,” and they spoke about it in hushed, excited tones. A family meant you would have a mama and papa, and sometimes brothers or sisters, usually older ones. Maybe even grandmas and grandpas. It meant you could live in a house and have your own room, or share it with just one other kid instead of ten all crammed together. It meant you got gifts on your birthday and Christmas. It meant you got new clothes and toys all to yourself.

And now, as she lays alone on the cold ground, slowly bleeding out in a collapsing school hallway thanks to a terrorist bombing, she finds herself contemplating her choices in life, and comes to a bitter, painful realization.
In the end, she just wanted to stop feeling so lonely.
…Maybe she should've been more careful about what she wished for.
