You found these tales frightening, but she always assured you of your safety. Your mother would kiss your face and giggle, teasing your fears away.
“If ever there is a day you are overcome by demons, if you awake to a knife at your throat, if the monsters dig their claws into you, or even if death comes knocking at your door, call out his name.”
You would always laugh, finally coming out from under your covers to look at her as she spoke.
“What’s his name mommy?” You would ask, no matter how many times she had told you this story, you would always ask, to make sure you would remember it in your time of need.
As she tucked you in and kissed your forehead, she whispered his name to you, like a secret between friends or an oath she swore to keep.

In nearly every way (except the most notable), the Princess of Hyrule was the Goddess incarnate. For that reason alone, it was a little ingenious for the King to offer up his daughter’s hand to whoever was able to pull the sword.
Link hadn’t meant to pull the sword. He planned to watch as his comrades pulled with all their might, perhaps even tease a few about how it was all for the better that the sword didn’t budge, because surely no Princess could ever love their ugly mugs, and then get into a good old-fashioned wrestling match with their bruised egos after one too many jokes. But it hadn’t mattered what he had in mind; Link’s plans be damned. The Goddess had already plucked him out of obscurity and set him along Her own path.
