“The fuck are you doing?” Kris hisses, fingers reaching out to latch at you before you could pull away. It’s the first time you’ve heard Kris swore. They must be really angry. Like Dad. “What are you, a child?”
At least there's no sign of anything like the hockey stick reappearing.
And hey, you're really mature for being eight! Not a child anymore, if you really thought about it. Just two more years and you’ll be in the double digits like an adult. Like Kris! But you didn’t want to lie to Kris. So you tuck away your complaints and pulse red in agreement.
In which the Soul is a child, and Kris finds out after it tries to comfort them at the end of Chapter Four.

Kris’ eavesdropping gradually stopped while they stared, brows furrowing as the soul shook up high. Maybe it was then that Kris had their first honest observation, one that wasn’t obstructed by their own denial, refusing to acknowledge they weren’t the only one suffering in this situation.
