Summary
The rain was relentless, pounding against her like a thousand tiny fists. She ran without thinking, her legs pumping faster than she ever thought they could. The world blurred around her tombstones streaked past, slick mud spraying with every desperate step. Her chest burned, her lungs screamed for air, and her heart slammed against her ribs like it was trying to escape.
Home had been unbearable glass smashing, her mother shouting, bottles clattering to the floor, a chaos she couldn’t stay in. Anywhere was better. Anywhere meant breathing without the weight of her mother’s rage pressing down on her.
Her soaked boots slipped over the slick stones of the graveyard, but she didn’t slow. Her coat clung to her skin, her hair plastered to her face, rain stinging her eyes. Then, she saw it: a dark, looming shape at the edge of the cemetery. The old Victorian house abandoned, cracked, its roof sagging stood like a watchful giant in the storm.
