He looked up at her with almost mocking disinterest, raising an eyebrow as he waited for her to speak first.
“I was surprised. I don’t hear of many children who dislike celebrating their birthdays.” Kate explained.
Miles’ mouth fell into a firm line. “Yeah well, I’m not like everyone else.” He collapsed back on his mattress.
“No, you’re not.” Kate nodded in agreement. But after a few moments, she spoke up again. “Miles, why don’t you celebrate your birthday?”
He gave no response. He didn’t even acknowledge she had spoken.
OR: Kate finds out Miles doesn't celebrate his birthday and intends to change that (with baby steps of course).

"Trust me, when she’s like this she’s basically a statue. It wouldn’t be entertaining at all.” Miles explained.
But it only left Kate more confused. “Entertaining- Miles I’m sorry but I’m trying to work…” She gestured for him to leave.
But he didn’t budge. “I can be more entertaining.”
That made Kate pause, tilting her head. “What?”
Miles smiled almost proudly. “If you’re looking for a good time. I’ll react however you want me to.”
OR: Kate learns just how far Miles is willing to go to protect his sister.

Instantly the smile was gone and replaced with a neutral gaze. “It’s my house. I can do what I want. I don’t think it concerns you.”
Kate’s eyes widened in surprise. While his tone was calm, his words were clear signs of panic.
Obviously Miles thought he was doing something wrong, or he wouldn’t bother trying to defend himself.
“I think it looks good.” She explained after a moment.
Miles raised an eyebrow, but said nothing.
“In fact I think you do makeup better than I do.” She half-joked. “I can never get the eyeliner even.”
OR: Kate finds out Miles likes makeup, and uses it to bond with him.

“Why do you care so much?” Miles asked. “Nobody’s ever cared before.”
That made Kate pause, and then she gently set her other hand on Miles’ other shoulder, slowly turning him to face her properly.
“Because I care about you and Flora. That’s why I’m here, Miles.” She explained sincerely.
Miles couldn’t help his doubt. “Everyone says that. Everyone leaves.”
OR: Miles has a habit of making himself throw up after meals. Kate's not on board with this.

"He was my friend."
"Yeah...that must've been really tough." Kate tried to sympathize.
But she noticed the way Miles hesitated. The way his fingers dug into his chair. The way something almost akin to fear shined in his eyes; if only for a moment.
And then his walls were back up, just as they always were.
Kate pushed regardless. "Do you want to talk about it?"
OR: In a world where there's nothing paranormal going on, and Kate isn't crazy, all that remains is two really scared, traumatized children who Kate just wants to help.
But Kate must admit, she's not sure anything, whether it be knowledge, experience, or even age, could've prepared her for the things Miles was about to tell her.
