You couldn't help but frown at his response, ready to challenge his reasoning. “What about patient-doctor relationships? Wouldn't some people find you spending time with me unprofessional?” you countered, holding eye contact.
Zayne's expression softened as he considered your words. “I suppose there are exceptions to every rule,” he said carefully. “But then again, we are not dating, are we?”
You felt the heat rush to your face as disappointment filled your chest at his reply.
"No, we're not," you replied quietly.
You suddenly felt stupid for the nice dress you wore.
