“Couldn't even leave your number?” His voice is thick with sleep, still scratchy from disuse.
Nicholas laughs gently, an effort to lighten the mood after being caught red-handed. He always tells himself to leave without fanfare, to not look back when he does. Looking back only makes you want to stay.
In spite of his own strict rules, he looks back anyway, seeing how Fuma blinks up at him with half-open lids, a lazy smile on his face.
“Maybe next time,” he says. “If we run into each other again.” An easy letdown. He wasn't planning on that.
Fuma hums, seeing through him. “Sure,” he says. “Next time.”
Nicholas spends the night with Fuma in college, not intending for it to go any further. What happens instead is a series of missed connections and misaligned opportunities over the years that keeps Fuma coming back into his life. Sometimes the timing isn't right. Sometimes one of them leaves. But what happens when Nicholas starts feeling like he wants to stay?
