Summary
He makes his way into the store, light filtering in through dusty windows. None of their inventory will be of any use to him, he knows, but it’s possible that someone somewhere along the line left something that could come in handy. Nothing turns up, but the more he looks through the cheap costumes and bright masks, the more an idea occurs to him.
It looks like just the sort of thing Ellie would have a field day with, he thinks with a small smile as he flicks a witch hat out of his way. It’s been too long since he’s seen her smile, really smile, and he can already imagine her delight in getting to pick through so many artifacts from the old world.
She’s going to love it.

There are tears streaming down her face, and when she looks up at him, Joel feels his breath hitch in his throat because she's looking at him like he's the only one who can make them stop, and that's all it takes for all the walls he's oh so carefully put up around himself in the last 20 years to finally crumble like a fucking house of cards in the wind.

His first warning that something is very wrong is how quiet the house is.
“I’m home,” he calls, sitting down on their entryway bench with a groan and working his boots off. “Ellie?” He calls when he doesn’t get a response. Her boots are haphazardly discarded by the door as usual, so he knows she’s home, but she only rarely doesn’t come barreling down the stairs the moment the door opens, making his heart skip a beat each time with fear that she’s about to take a header in her excitement.
Even after the call, however, no Ellie appears.

Summary
An hour from dawn, just as Ellie catches the first strains of fluting birdsong, she hears that rustle again. She keeps her eyes squeezed shut and holds very still as Joel’s boots crunch their way over the six feet of dead grass in between their sleeping spots; as he breathes in once, noisily, like he wants to say something; as something heavy and warm drops over her body.
Joel’s jacket doesn’t smell very nice—like him—but it’s better than nothing.
Ellie goes through the stages of infection.
