“Avert your eyes, Jacob,” Jack suggested as he slid his hand downward to Sam’s hip and tugged, shifting her easily onto his lap. To her credit, she only looked shocked instead of uncomfortable.
“I’ll let it slide this time, but only because I know you love her,” Jacob dismissed.
“Yes, Sir, I do,” Jack added, and with a flash of Sam’s blue eyes, he wondered if he had said too much. The truth was that he did love her. Not some other version of her, but her. He loved this Sam who hurt and cried and missed the husband she loved. Maybe that’s why he had sounded so convincing. Maybe that was why she looked frightened.

Summary
Canon compliant, in character attempt at a realistic development of the Sam/Jack relationship seasons 1-8. “Somebody told me that it was good to remember.” He was looking down at her now instead of at Charlie. Sam wasn’t sure what she was feeling, only that she was feeling a lot of it. Did he mean that he had done this because of her?
“Yeah, I think it is,” she answered him, looking back to Charlie.
“Thanks,” he whispered. Was this what it had been like before they had become strictly co-workers? She didn’t think so. She remembered a lot of flirting and teasing—a lot of fun. She didn’t remember anything so heavy. Maybe this was better, after all. She missed the flirting, but maybe this was what he actually needed. Maybe he needed the things that were hard for him instead of the things that were second nature. Maybe she was selfish to want both, but hey, a girl could dream.
