Summary
He doesn't know how long he's been sitting on the floor in the center of town; long enough for him to run out of tears and energy to cry, at least. Eventually, the first rays of the sun shine above the village's houses, spilling over him and scene before him. The early risers of the town finally rise out of bed and outside of their houses to find him there.
He can see the pity and guilt in their eyes as they take him back to the doctor's office and lay him back in bed. It's kind of funny how it's after they killed the one person that cared for him that they start to do the same.
(They don't know the true extent of their relationship but it's clear by the way Owen reacted to the pyre about how he cared for Louis. They don't know much about Owen because they basically outcaste him for his illness but after this they feel guilty and pity for the man, especially after they hear that Owen was going to be cured if wasn't for them. So, unbeknownst to the man, the town tries their 'hardest' to fix him while he lays in bed apathetically waiting for his end to come.)
