Summary
Awareness filters in slowly, then all at once. This is unusual for Ango—normally he wakes with the kind of quiet dread that forces his consciousness into clarity, dwelling on all the problems he’ll face that day and all the problems he had dealt with the day before. As a government agent posing as a Port Mafia agent posing as a Mimic agent, his duties—and potential for a gruesome and untimely death—have been piling on.
But still he clings onto those last threads of respite before his mind jolts into cognizance.
The beeping comes first: slow, methodical, unmistakable. The sterile scent of subdued suffering. The dry, metallic taste on the insides of his cheeks, and something thicker, more acidic. Like he had thrown up at some point.
Ango is in a hospital.
(or: in an information exchange gone bad, ango was captured and briefly tortured. his friends make sure he's okay in the aftermath.)
