Summary
“The only place you’ll lead anyone is an early grave.”
He doesn’t miss the way Javy’s gaze swings to him, or how the laughter dies on Nat’s tongue. His own smile broadens, plastic and brittle, the pool cue creaking in his grip as he leans in toward Rooster. There’s venom on his tongue, a disquiet that roils up like water finally boiled. It’s his daddy in him, that quiet rage that whispers more than it yells, that scars more than it bruises.

The furrow between Dom’s brows deepened, his chin dipping just slightly in the affirmative. “It wouldn’t be, it’s in my father’s name.”
“Well there’s a hit out on the driver,” Brian said, raking his eyes over Dom and trying to size up what exactly the detective might have stumbled across that warranted such a hefty bounty.

Summary
“I thought you quit.”
Brian flicked ash off the end of his cigarette, watching the embers flare briefly before fading into the obscurity of the gray dawn light. “I say the same thing every time I sleep with you and look where we are,” he murmured, the downward curve of his lips deepening as a broad hand reached over his shoulder, snagging the last of the smoldering length and grinding it out on the wrought iron railing of the balcony.
