Summary
Many years ago, Wei Wuxian, the Yiling Patriarch, sealed the entrance to the Burial Mounds to protect the surviving Wen clan from being wiped out by the other sects.
One day, while Wen Yuan is gathering herbs at the foot of the mountain in Yiling, he’s attacked by a group of young cultivators on a night hunt. Wen Yuan manages to escape thanks to Wei Wuxian’s intervention—but the Patriarch does not let the offense go unpunished.
As retribution, he demands that the one responsible for the attack become his servant, at least for a few months.

Wei Wuxian finds out about Lan Wangji’s punishment before the first siege of the Burial Mounds. He arrives at the Cloud Recesses stricken with grief, still covered in blood from Nightless City, and kidnaps Lan Wangji without any plan. This spurs misunderstandings, earlier revelations and confessions, a rescue, and a journey that will take them all the way to Koi Tower. Will taking Lan Wangji to the Burial Mounds with Wei Wuxian save the remaining Wens, or will it only hasten their demise?
