Mike froze, ignoring the calls of his colleague who was encouraging him to continue his story. Near a hedge of old dry wood, a young man was kneeling. He looked nothing like the other inhabitants of the village. His silhouette was wiry, almost skeletal, marked by a growth that malnutrition had made difficult. But it was his skin that struck Mike like a blow to the face. It was not black, but a shade of warm sand, peppered with dark freckles and burn marks from the equatorial sun that had never spared him. His arms, thin but tensed by effort, bore white scars—small bush scratches that stood out against his tanned complexion.
