Because of this, in addition to the decrepit estate and rarely seen yet unpleasant extended family, made you very reluctant to return here.
    Naturally, that meant that this time was an exception. Or rather, something had happened that demanded you fulfill your duty as family member: There was a wedding.
    You hadn’t gotten an invitation letter; instead, your mother had called. She and your father had escaped the rural mountains for a better life and she long eradicated her original dialect, yet her way of speaking had always been hard to listen to, so by the end of her call, you only got that some cousin of yours was getting married back in the village and you had to arrive before the auspicious date.
    So duty-bound, you went.
