Just a regular day, but they were the days Ellie liked the most.
Then Tommy came over.
That, in itself, wasn’t the problem. The problem was the fact that he had interrupted their breakfast by pounding on the door like someone was dying. Ellie flashed a look to Joel, but he was already standing, looking slightly worried as he walked toward the front door just beyond the kitchen. Tommy beat him to it, opening their front door just as Joel reached it.
“Joel.”
The word was spoken with such soft desperation that Ellie was on her feet in an instant. Something was wrong, something was happening, and whatever it was had Tommy shaken enough to say Joel’s name like that.
“Joel. There’s a woman at the gate.”
(Or Sarah lives! somehow! And Ellie is forced to realize her place besides Joel now that his REAL daughter is home)

“You know I don’t want to keep you in a cage, but you have to be reasonable. If you had talked to me a bit more about this before making plans with your friends, you could have gone out with me or Tommy first -“
“You would just - you would fucking - hover, and I don’t need you to. I know how to ride and defend myself and shoot better than anyone else here my age, and you know it,” Ellie yells back.
“And it still doesn’t change that your age is 14 years old,” Joel says with a raised eyebrow. “You don’t know what all is out there, Ellie.”
“Oh, like infected? Because I’m pretty sure I could handle myself there,” she says, gritting her teeth.
“There’s way worse shit than infected,” he says cryptically, making Ellie scoff. “And your immunity won’t save you from getting ripped apart.”
“Right,” she mutters. It’s a control tactic, she thinks. Sure, there are some bad people in the world, but infected are probably a way bigger threat. There’s a long pause where they both just stare each other down, Ellie just as stubborn as the man who raised her, both unwilling to back down from this fight.
or, ellie is 14 now and experiencing some major growing pains.
