For the longest time, Xiao is alright. Everything is alright.
Except when it’s not, most of the time. But that’s the norm, the usual. The price the Vigilant Yaksha accepted and that comes with his duties.Xiao became used to listening to Barbato's music from afar, rarely allowing anything further throughout the millennia. He tries not to overthink why the divine tunes saved him, or if he was even worthy of it. It’s alright too, he doesn’t have to know, it’s for the best to limit such unattainable desires.
Until it all changes when Venti decides to weave his presence into Xiao’s life, not as a god, but as a dear company, a contrast to the shadows. For once, Xiao allows something good to bloom inside of him.

“Venti,” Aether tries again, wetting his lips. “When Zhongli lost his Gnosis,” he says and the words are so carefully chosen that it arouses suspicion in the former Anemo Archon, “he seems to have lost something else.”
“His dignity and self-respect?” grumbles Venti, unhelpfully.
“Is he always like this?” asks Zhongli, plainly.
“Oh, you trunkless legs of stone, did I strike a nerve, did I —” starts Venti but then pointedly clamps his mouth shut. A cold chill races down his spine. “What did you mean?” he asks instead. Swallowing down a lump of nerves, Venti continues, “You know I’m always like this, blockhead.”
or, zhongli loses his memories temporarily after giving up his gnosis and the traveler brings him to mondstadt so venti can pick up the pieces. era-long misunderstandings come to the surface and venti learns the meaning of 'always'.

It had been Xiao’s idea. A sort of pilgrimage to celebrate the marriage, to Mondstadt’s places of worship. To learn the ways they adored the Anemo Archon, he had said, and Venti’s eyes glimmered—the green of his eyes swallowed up by his pupils blown wide—and he had kissed Xiao frenziedly, lips and tongue and not a little teeth.
He’s doing that still, each breath shuddering through both of them as one. Venti’s nails raking against Xiao’s scalp, his fingers buried in Xiao’s hair. He’s a little careless with it now, a little more rough, nipping at the sensitive skin of Xiao’s throat, the jut of his collarbones. Xiao will have bruises there tomorrow, scattered like stars below his collar.
