    Lan Wangji had seen Resentment firsthand in the Starshot Campaign. He had seen a single ship falling out of formation, then another, and another. Captains begging for help before comm lines suddenly went quiet. Entire fleets sent into disarray, firing at each other until only debris remained. The rare red-eyed survivors, feral and violent, infected by the same virus as their ships, put down like rabid dogs before they could infect anyone, or anything, else.

    Anything was worth ensuring that never happened again.
