Summary
We used to see in the news, back before the turn, these incredible stories about mothers lifting cars off of children pinned beneath tires or people fighting off bears and surviving. Hysterical strength, they call it. An adrenaline rush. Miracles. Whatever the hell it is, I can feel it coursing through my veins, a crackling current just beneath my skin. It's the same rage I felt the day my father sent a tank through our fences, the same despair that once hung heavy in a sewer drain while the ground shook and a brave boy in an old Sheriff's hat inched towards death. I'm not gonna be able to hold on forever, but I can hold on a little longer. I can fight one more fight.
Always one more fight.

Summary
Adrienne Blake's life, if you can even call it that, is a mess. Estranged from her family as a result of her mother's death and living with an asshole boyfriend she only likes when she's high, she's all set up to become another sad story on the news. Until the dead start walking.

"Where'd you come from?" Shane questions. "You're a long way from the refugee center."
"Atlanta."
"Oh, you poor thing," Lori breathes, stricken, exchanging a glance with Shane. "We never made it into the city, but we… we saw the bombs."
I didn't know there was a refugee center. This is the first time I've been outside in… God, it must be months now. We've been cooped up at home for weeks, waiting for the pandemic to pass. I must look about as clueless as I feel, because the questions stop.
"We're glad you're with us," Shane says eventually, making eye contact with me in the rearview. "Makin' it outta that city on your own? We could use somebody like you."
Somebody like me. Right.
