the line is silent for a few seconds, and max is breathing heavily, almost sure he would hear the signature beep of lewis hanging up the call, mentally preparing for it, but then-
lewis bursts out in laughter.
“you did what?!”, he chokes out between laughs.
“it’s not funny”, he deadpans, but he’s certain lewis can hear the relieved smile in his voice. at least this is better than having to stand the embarrassment of lewis hanging up and never talking to him again, and he does have to admit, it is pretty funny.
or, alternatively: max does a dumb thing, and then has to ask his ex-boyfriend to pretend they're still together. things escalate.
