Summary
Three gin and tonics, half a bottle of red wine, and four pints of beer in, Jiang Cheng comes to a couple of realizations in quick successions. They part the fuzziness of his mind like a beam of golden sunlight shining through a break between churning grey storm clouds. A veritable lightbulb going off in his foggy, groggy mind.

“Ziyuan,” Jiang Fengmian asks one evening as both him and his wife are preparing for bed. “Do you notice how our youngest tends to attract…a different sort of trouble?”
Ziyuan, who’s been busy removing her pearl earrings, goes still. She looks at him through the reflection of her vanity mirror. “Trouble? Our A-Cheng?” The unspoken ‘how absurd’ tacked on to the end is as clear as day. Still, she asks, “What do you mean?”
Ah, how can he put this delicately without sounding preposterous? “By trouble I mean in the form of attention.” A pause. “Lots of attention. Possibly in the form of, uh, seasoned gentlemen.”
Yu Ziyuan turns around and gives him a long, quiet stare. “Fengmian,” she enunciates slowly, carefully, “are you telling me that our son is a magnet for perverted old men?”
