“Sweetest Anabel, like the roses in June. I hope she’ll smile soon. My sweetest, sweetest Anabel.” He sang, under his breath, into the skin beneath my ear. It was the song he’d sung to me as a child, whenever I got hurt playing in the street with Finn or pissed off Polly enough to be put on punishment. He rocked the both of us, to and fro, until I unclenched.
“I’m not your sweet little girl anymore,” I said.
“So I heard. What are you now, hmm?”.+.
