Summary
Navigating the aftermath of Shannon’s death, Eddie never thought he’d be a widower by age thirty-two and raising a kid on his own without any help. When Christopher calls into one of those late-night talk radio shows asking how to help his Dad, Eddie realizes that he needs to try and move on for Christopher’s sake, so he reluctantly starts dating what everyone tells him is the perfect woman for someone like him.
It turns out Christopher, and he have much different ideas of just who they need.
Buck has had a terrible year. His physical injuries from the truck bombing were bad enough but having Ali leave him seems like a sign from the universe that he’s always meant to be alone. Listening to the radio at night, he hears the most adorable kid ever talking about how his Dad is sad and needs a new partner—LA kids are pretty progressive, and this Christopher kid isn’t particular if his Dad ends up with a woman or a man. “I am looking for the Captain of this firehouse,” he heard the voice say. He heard Tommy say, “Oh, you must be the person replacing me. Let me get Captain Nash for you.” He was friendly, but Bobby could hear a hint of mockery in that response.
“You said Captain Nash?” the voice said, and without a doubt Bobby knew by the way he said his last name who was standing down in that bay and wasn’t going to be sticking around. He dropped the spoon he was stirring with, and it crashed to the ground as he bolted from around the counter towards the edge of the loft.
“Buck,” he yelled, and the man with his back towards him kept walking. He started to take the stairs, and the figure kept walking, “Buck.” He could hear Hen and Chimeny following and saying, “Who is Buck?” but he didn’t have time to explain. He said the kid’s name several more times as he reached the bottom of the stairs.
And when the figure was almost out of the firehouse doors, Bobby finally used his fatherly voice and yelled, “EVAN JAMES BUCKLEY YOU BETTER TURN YOUR ASS AROUND RIGHT NOW.” The figure stopped moving, but he did not turn around.

Summary
From a very young age, Evan Buckley knew he would end up alone.
After Eddie leaves to go after Chris, Buck knows that he needs to get out of Los Angeles for a while. He travels just like he did before he joined the 118, looking for a reason to keep going after losing the family he thought would finally stay.
