“It’s funny.” Falin rubs her cheek. “People always said they like me because I’m gentle. Quiet. Selfless. But none of that was really true.” Her mouth pulls into a small smile. “Looking back, I think I was too scared to be anything else. Too scared to want anything that would be inconvenient for anyone else.” She smiles a little wider. “And that’s what everyone liked about me, in the end.”
Marcille inhales sharply. “Falin—”
“But now, I don’t care. As much, anyway. I like this. I like wanting things and being honest about it. I like being strong and scary sometimes.” She digs her nails into the back of her own neck, relishing the sting. “I think I like it more than I like being liked.”

Most days, Falin can’t actually tell which is the vainglorious monster and which is the lonely human, which she should honor and which she needs to bury — but with Marcille, it doesn’t even matter. Because Marcille, wonderful Marcille — she satisfies both so fully and readily without ever being asked. Without ever knowing what an impossible thing she’s done, as always.
