Mike exhaled through his nose. Slow. “You’re unbelievable.”
“Because I want to help?”“Because you think helping is the only way you matter.” That hit a little too close, and they both knew it.
Will’s eyes flinched sideways, but he didn’t break. “Mike—”
“No,” Mike said, and his voice was still low, but more clipped now. “No. You’re not coming in.”
Will opened his mouth and Mike raised a hand. Not dramatic. Not loud. Just final.
“I’m your supervising physician when we’re on the same rotation,” Mike said flatly. “You’re an RN in my ward. I’m a second-year resident. You want me to get technical? I will. I can write you up for showing up off-schedule in active recovery without rest clearance. I’ll tell Steve. I should tell Steve.”
Will froze. It wasn’t the words that did it. It was the way Mike said them—flat, unflinching, in that tone he only used when he was done asking nicely. That rare tone that stripped the history out of their voices and made them, suddenly, their job titles.
It wasn’t Mike-and-Will anymore.
It was Dr. Wheeler and Nurse Byers.
