Summary
Gellert Grindelwald had lost and chose imprisonment and exile. While not content, he was at least resigned to his own failures and mistakes.
Voldemort cannot abide a wizard of such power and prominence and history ignoring his existence and demands fealty from all.
Grindelwald cannot allow Tom Riddle to command him or kill what is his, and he chooses to leave his prison to punish Voldemort for his temerity and foolishness.
And in the end, Albus Dumbledore must commit a sin of forgiveness and a dark act of trust to create the strained hope of enough time for his plan to come to fruition.
